.AbstractImmunocytochemistry (aka immunohistochemistry), a technique used for the localization of specific cellular antigens, was introduced to diagnostic tumor pathology about 20 yr ago. The procedure allows for the visualization of antigens in tissue samples via the sequential application of a specific antibody to the antigen (primary antibody), a secondary antibody to the primary antibody, an enzyme complex, and a chromogenic substrate. The enzymatic activation of the chromogen results in a visible reaction product at the antigen site, which is interpreted using a light microscope. Immunocytochemistry is routinely used in hospital laboratories to diagnose cancers, identify infectious organisms, differentiate malignant from benign processes, and reveal prognostic indicators.
